【Dharma Words of Venerable Master Hsuan Hua】
Today I am transmitting a key secret to you; what is this secret? It is that at a critical moment, you must remain calm; do not become nervous. Put life and death aside, single-mindedly recite Guanyin Bodhisattva, and you will certainly turn danger into safety and overcome difficulties. In the most dangerous times, contemplate within your mind like this: "Anyway, I am about to die now, but before I die, I want to recite Guanyin Bodhisattva with all my might; perhaps there is a ray of hope." If you have this kind of thought, you can encounter disaster yet turn it into auspiciousness.
It is like the airplane you are riding suddenly malfunctions in the air and is about to crash to the ground; at this time you must recite Guanyin Bodhisattva. Because Guanyin Bodhisattva is the Bodhisattva who saves the suffering and the disastrous, a Bodhisattva who responds to every plea. If I do not recite Guanyin Bodhisattva, my life faces extreme danger and there is no hope. At this time, you must recite with the most pious heart to induce a response from Guanyin Bodhisattva's compassion, saving the lives of everyone on the plane. When attending a session, you should make this kind of contemplation to recite Guanyin Bodhisattva.
Think again, the train I am riding is now derailing; in that moment hanging by a thread, if I do not recite Guanyin Bodhisattva, all the passengers on the whole train will die. Reciting Guanyin Bodhisattva is a cry for help; when the Bodhisattva hears it, regardless of the distance of thousands of mountains and rivers, [She] will immediately arrive before you to rescue you from suffering and difficulty; it is very efficacious. Think again, the steamship I am riding meets with misfortune in the great ocean, is about to sink, and I will be buried in the bellies of fish. At this most dangerous juncture, I want to recite Guanyin Bodhisattva; even in the last minute or second, I will also recite Guanyin Bodhisattva. If [you do] this, you will surely turn bad luck into good fortune.
Think again, the car I am sitting in is speeding on the road when suddenly the mechanics fail, the car body flies up, and below is a cliff of ten thousand feet; if it falls down, [I] will definitely have a crushed body and shattered bones, and everything will be finished. At this time, if you recite Guanyin Bodhisattva for your life, the car will land safely at the bottom of the cliff, with shock but no danger. This is the response of reciting Guanyin Bodhisattva.
Under circumstances of urgent danger, if you can recite one phrase of Guanyin Bodhisattva, it surpasses one hundred, one thousand, or ten thousand sounds of Guanyin Bodhisattva [recited] during ordinary times. Why? Because when it is not dangerous, the mind that recites Guanyin Bodhisattva is not earnest or sincere enough. Therefore, to recite Guanyin Bodhisattva, you must recite piously, and recite with a true heart, only then will there be inconceivable responses.
